Barcelona Murders and Trump

I am seeing lots of messages (mostly by Muslims) on Facebook that are condemning the Barcelona murders and of course, everybody should be condemning this horror perpetrated against innocent people by mindless beings.
I also note that politicians are lining up to have their voices added to the condemnations of the Barcelona murders and that too, is a good thing…even V-P Pence threw his voice in.

Try This! Ramadan, Fasting and Self-improvement

The month of Ramadan (Muslim year 1438 AH) and fasting is expected to start on the 28th of May 2017. Expected because it is calculated according to the sighting of the moon.

First Published August 24, 2008

The Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammed during this, the ninth month of the Muslim Lunar calendar, making it one of the holiest months for Muslims. This is the month for not only physical, but even more importantly, spiritual cleansing for Muslims.

The Muslim calendar is about 10 days shorter than the Common Era (Gregorian) calendar, thus, Ramadan begins about ten days earlier each C.E. Year, cycling through every season, over a period of about thirty-three years…including Summer! For those living in mild climates like the North-West United States, summer fasting is not a problem. However, in the heat of the Middle-East, Africa or Asia, fasting is a major test of endurance as well!

Observed with great ceremony, Muslims may not eat or drink from dawn to dusk each day, but there are exemptions. Under-age children, the infirm, the elderly and the ill, are exempt from the requirements of fasting while those who are traveling and  menstruating women, may make up afterwards. Some schools of thought allow for medications that do not provide nutrition, such as insulin, heart medications etc., while other schools believe nothing may be ingested during the fasting period. My Withdrawal From CAIR Event; Update

On April 22nd, I was at a meeting with Nihad Awad, the head of CAIR National, but more of that later.

I was a table captain at the up-coming CAIR (Council on Islamic American Relations) fundraiser and was well on my way to having two tables filled until CAIR National appeared to support the Tomahawk bombing of Syria and within the same period, another CAIR chapter had made vile statements against a Shia spiritual leader. For years, CAIR has appeared to hold a position of supporting causes that had Sunni Muslims as victims and at best, remained silent on causes where Shia Muslims were the target. This time, it was too much for me; I told CAIR-WA that unless steps were taken to reject these clear acts of sectarian bigotry, I would resign my role as table captain for the fundraiser. At that point, a CAIR board member labeled my call as “blackmail” and suggested I resign anyway so I did. Since my resignation was public (FB April 12th), I was criticized by some Muslim friends that my actions hurt CAIR and I should not have helped destroy CAIR. This reminded me of a story (Hadith) about the prophet Mohammed:

  • Help your brother whether he is an oppressor or an oppressed person”, said the Prophet. A companion asked: “Messenger of Allah, I will help him if he is an oppressed person, but please tell me how I am to help if he happens to be an oppressor?”. The Prophet answered: “Check him from doing injustice, because preventing him from committing aggression is a help to him”. (Ibn  Malik)

Working Together & Current Issues

Following the increase of hate-activities, we called a meeting of people who may be influential within their groups and communities at the Bellevue library. It was first estimated that about 6-8 people might come but then indications were that we may get as many as 80-100. As it turned out, there were eight of us present.

While we are surrounded by bad news of hate-mongers taking advantage of every opportunity to whip up anti-immigrant hysteria with the violence aimed at Muslims, there are also some very encouraging indicators around us if we take some time to look and reflect. Continue reading

That gurgling sound we hear is the sound of the last of America’s moral values going down the sewer.

Neil Gorsuch has been confirmed by the Senate  and will be sworn in on Monday. This judge is so pro-money, that he found against the truck driver who was fired for abandoning his cargo to find a warm place during a snow-storm to avoid freezing to death. A lot of leaders have used this example to show how blatant Gorsuch’s biases are. Hardly anyone commented in the fact that Gorsuch was one of the White House lawyers who defended the authority of the Administration, to use “Enhanced Techniques” (Torture) on prisoners. Gorsuch’s excuse is that he was merely doing what he was paid to do because he was employed by the White House; “I was only following orders” is an excuse used by many a scoundrel throughout history. Bombs, Hate, Jews and Muslims

Jewish organizations are still reeling from a round of bomb threats against their schools and centers this is the fifth round of threats just this year. Over a hundred Jewish gravestones were vandalized in Philadelphia, not even a week after a similar event on Missouri. This is of course most seriously viewed by Jews in the US and around the world and it should also be viewed seriously by any sensible person because Hate is now on a speedy path upwards.

The Trump administration has made it better for people to hate openly, the Bush administration started it after 9-11 and the Obama administration did nothing to slow it down, in spite of their wonderful words against discrimination and persecution, especially against Muslims.

Jewish organizations have a job to do in order to help stem the rise in hate-fueled violence; they need to stop fueling the hate themselves. Continue reading

Muslim Bans, Muslim Lists…Action and Reaction

Targeting of Muslims has begun, it started with a sweeping ban on everyone from seven Muslim-majority countries (Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen). Then it was drawn back to be a ban on all refugees from those countries, then “Extreme Vetting of people from these countries; all in order to stop ALL “Islamic Terrorism” of course! Presumably, terrorism by non-Muslims may continue because it is more palatable. Muslims are being harassed at US entry points (yes, even more than ever before) and some have even been pressured into signing a renunciation of their Permanent Resident status.

Let just allow that the Trump administration and his equally Muslim-hating cabinet are really concerned about “Terrorism”. The term they used was “Islamic Terrorism” which means Muslims. Continue reading

Goodbye Mr. President.

Dear President Obama, your second term is over, you will be gone in a few weeks so I thought I needed to share my thoughts and feelings about your tenure before you go, please forgive any slights you find in this article.

During your first election in 2008, I was an Elector, one of the first Muslim Electors in the country. I was looking forward to the promise of Hope and Change which, after King George the Worst, could only get better.

I like what you did with the so-called “Obama Care”. Of course it does not go as far as it should in any self-respecting developed country, but I understand the limitations you had, facing an opportunistic and spineless Congress that caters more to their paymasters than they do to the electorate and to the nation. You did your best and many people have been helped in spite of its much-proclaimed faults. Thank you.

You were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize one year after you became President, in 2009. I must admit I was a bit mystified because at the time, I could not see anything you had done that rose to the level of the award, Continue reading

Interfaith Activities and Muslims in America

The three Abrahamic faiths are deep in interfaith activities. Among Jews, Christians and Muslims faith-house leaders meet with their counterparts; Jews and Muslims, Muslims and Christians, boards with boards and meetings go on. Everybody feels good that we are intermingling, we Muslims feel great that we are connecting with the other faiths and ‘interfaith’ is happening. We stroke each other’s egos and incessantly compare the common features of out holy texts to prove that we are actually, more similar than we are different.

The goal for Muslims is to communicate with the others, with Jews and Christians because they hold the keys to existence for Muslims in America. “Islam is a religion of Peace!” has become a mantra repeated everywhere and people are becoming tired of this slogan. As Muslims, we cannot afford to communicate with faith-leaders and ignore the common person on the street because it is the common person who will ultimately protect us from America’s fanatical ultra-patriots and from leaders like Donald Trump and his Islam-hating Cabinet and advisors.

Muslims need to take a different approach. Continue reading

Trump Era. Threat or Opportunity for Muslims?

The fun hasn’t even begun as the storm gathers around Muslims and perhaps, some minorities. The Trump Presidency offers great danger to Muslims ranging from what now seems almost benign Obama persecution of Muslims, to the outer limits of human imagination.

Yet, this is also a great opportunity for Muslims in which all our future generations can be protected.

Let us first review the Perils.
