"To comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable"

Working Together & Current Issues

Following the increase of hate-activities, we called a meeting of people who may be influential within their groups and communities at the Bellevue library. It was first estimated that about 6-8 people might come but then indications were that we may get as many as 80-100. As it turned out, there were eight of us present.

While we are surrounded by bad news of hate-mongers taking advantage of every opportunity to whip up anti-immigrant hysteria with the violence aimed at Muslims, there are also some very encouraging indicators around us if we take some time to look and reflect. Continue reading

That gurgling sound we hear is the sound of the last of America’s moral values going down the sewer.

Neil Gorsuch has been confirmed by the Senate  and will be sworn in on Monday. This judge is so pro-money, that he found against the truck driver who was fired for abandoning his cargo to find a warm place during a snow-storm to avoid freezing to death. A lot of leaders have used this example to show how blatant Gorsuch’s biases are. Hardly anyone commented in the fact that Gorsuch was one of the White House lawyers who defended the authority of the Administration, to use “Enhanced Techniques” (Torture) on prisoners. Gorsuch’s excuse is that he was merely doing what he was paid to do because he was employed by the White House; “I was only following orders” is an excuse used by many a scoundrel throughout history. Vigil for the murdered Indian in Kansas

Miserable day for an open-air vigil but there was a good turnout of South Asians. Of course, there were lots of speeches and most people seemed to think they were the only ones making a speech and we were in a warm auditorium, but sadly, they were wrong.
I believe we have lost yet another opportunity for political strength and inter-faith cooperation (not the one where we read our scriptures and praise the other ones).

Bombs, Hate, Jews and Muslims

Jewish organizations are still reeling from a round of bomb threats against their schools and centers this is the fifth round of threats just this year. Over a hundred Jewish gravestones were vandalized in Philadelphia, not even a week after a similar event on Missouri. This is of course most seriously viewed by Jews in the US and around the world and it should also be viewed seriously by any sensible person because Hate is now on a speedy path upwards.

The Trump administration has made it better for people to hate openly, the Bush administration started it after 9-11 and the Obama administration did nothing to slow it down, in spite of their wonderful words against discrimination and persecution, especially against Muslims.

Jewish organizations have a job to do in order to help stem the rise in hate-fueled violence; they need to stop fueling the hate themselves. Continue reading

Muslim Bans, Muslim Lists…Action and Reaction

Targeting of Muslims has begun, it started with a sweeping ban on everyone from seven Muslim-majority countries (Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen). Then it was drawn back to be a ban on all refugees from those countries, then “Extreme Vetting of people from these countries; all in order to stop ALL “Islamic Terrorism” of course! Presumably, terrorism by non-Muslims may continue because it is more palatable. Muslims are being harassed at US entry points (yes, even more than ever before) and some have even been pressured into signing a renunciation of their Permanent Resident status.

Let just allow that the Trump administration and his equally Muslim-hating cabinet are really concerned about “Terrorism”. The term they used was “Islamic Terrorism” which means Muslims. Continue reading

Goodbye Mr. President.

Dear President Obama, your second term is over, you will be gone in a few weeks so I thought I needed to share my thoughts and feelings about your tenure before you go, please forgive any slights you find in this article.

During your first election in 2008, I was an Elector, one of the first Muslim Electors in the country. I was looking forward to the promise of Hope and Change which, after King George the Worst, could only get better.

I like what you did with the so-called “Obama Care”. Of course it does not go as far as it should in any self-respecting developed country, but I understand the limitations you had, facing an opportunistic and spineless Congress that caters more to their paymasters than they do to the electorate and to the nation. You did your best and many people have been helped in spite of its much-proclaimed faults. Thank you.

You were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize one year after you became President, in 2009. I must admit I was a bit mystified because at the time, I could not see anything you had done that rose to the level of the award, Continue reading

Interfaith Activities and Muslims in America

The three Abrahamic faiths are deep in interfaith activities. Among Jews, Christians and Muslims faith-house leaders meet with their counterparts; Jews and Muslims, Muslims and Christians, boards with boards and meetings go on. Everybody feels good that we are intermingling, we Muslims feel great that we are connecting with the other faiths and ‘interfaith’ is happening. We stroke each other’s egos and incessantly compare the common features of out holy texts to prove that we are actually, more similar than we are different.

The goal for Muslims is to communicate with the others, with Jews and Christians because they hold the keys to existence for Muslims in America. “Islam is a religion of Peace!” has become a mantra repeated everywhere and people are becoming tired of this slogan. As Muslims, we cannot afford to communicate with faith-leaders and ignore the common person on the street because it is the common person who will ultimately protect us from America’s fanatical ultra-patriots and from leaders like Donald Trump and his Islam-hating Cabinet and advisors.

Muslims need to take a different approach. Continue reading

Trump Era. Threat or Opportunity for Muslims?

The fun hasn’t even begun as the storm gathers around Muslims and perhaps, some minorities. The Trump Presidency offers great danger to Muslims ranging from what now seems almost benign Obama persecution of Muslims, to the outer limits of human imagination.

Yet, this is also a great opportunity for Muslims in which all our future generations can be protected.

Let us first review the Perils.

Muslims in the Trump Era

President Trump. Who would have thunk this could happen?

I have had a few people making contact with me, telling me to keep my mouth shut and my e-pen turned off, even someone very dear to me said so. I am not sure if even a dozen people read my thoughts, but shared with even them, it is a victory. Muslims…ALL of us, urgently need to bring awareness and resistance to the political bigots and their coward colleagues and kick them out of office if that is what it takes. ALL of us need to make sure our political leaders are hit with questions like, “What are you doing against bigotry in this country? If every year, the politicians signed on the NDAA whose Section 1021 directly targets Muslims for “detention” without trial or charges…forever… then they are doing nothing, nothing at all. Oh Syria!

When I read details of what is going on in Syria, it breaks my heart. I wonder about the heartlessness of a regime that drops barrel bombs filed with shrapnel, on crowded places. I wonder about the calculated cruelty, the so-called “strategic necessity” of supporting one side against another, that the US practices. Continue reading
