"To comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable"

To be American, Must I be White and Christian?

Sometimes, one views being right with mixed feelings; somewhat like saying that  French public will revolt soon and we will all be taken to the Guillotine…and then being carted to the public square for the guillotining during the revolution; there is absolutely no satisfaction in being right!

For a long time, I have been saying that if the Republican Party comes to power, Muslims are going to see persecution as perhaps we have not seen before. I have been saying this because the Republican Party machinery has been actively pursuing virulent anti-Muslim rhetoric disguised a “Patriotism”; their different party clubs have been showing hate-Islam videos, their Senators have been inviting Islamophobes to the Capitol and hosting Hate-Islam video screenings for Congressional members and Continue reading

America Today…Living Hypocrisy

America Today…Living Hypocrisy

The title itself is enough to get the REAL Americans to get their guns and growl at these “Muzlems” who are just itching to destroy “our way of life”; few will start thinking about what it could mean, some will read this essay just so they can dismiss the writer (me) as a crazy who has no idea of what REAL FREEDOM means and the many sacrifices that are necessary to preserve this hard-earned “FREEDOM”.

There is a lot of mythology around what America is and what it stands for. The tragedy is that for a brief period in our history America may have meant all the things we seek to hold dear and all the things we glorify as representing these great United States. But that period of nirvana was far to brief to be recorded properly as representing America; for the past century, we have been living one life, while holding up a different persona to glorify and people have not dared to say that the Empire has no clothes for fear of being condemned as traitors who don’t deserve to enjoy what we serve up to the people.

This is a New Year’s message to my fellow Americans and to America, it is not meant to dredge up past history, the past Century or, what we have been doing with our foreign policy; this message is meant to discuss what is happening NOW, over the past ten years and how America is accelerating towards a totalitarian regime that could remind us of the Soviet Bloc countries. Eid Mubarak?…Eid Mubarak!

What is Eid?

There are a few times when I miss the old country and my old friends, and Eid is among those times.

Eid in America is bittersweet event; on one hand there are the factionalized Muslim communities who insist on having Eid on at least two different days and sometimes, three. The inevitable and never-ending Moon-sighting controversy where Muslims cannot agree on whether to believe the science that accurately predicts to the minute, when the new moon will show and where or, to believe the old man on a hilltop claiming he saw the moon even as he points to en entirely different direction.
Should we accept the date set in Arabia? after all, that is where the final word on Eid is because that is when Haj is over.
Should we accept a global concept of moon-sighting where if it is sighted at one place, it is sighted all over the world or, should we accept local sightings by OUR religious scholars?

A Rabbi friend of mine told me that Jews addressed this problem (they too, work on the Lunar Calendar)…hundreds of years ago! They decreed that all holidays (except for Yom Kippur) would be observed for one extra day, just to be sure they observed it on the right moon-sighting day. Today, Reform (Liberal) Jews have removed the second day observance because they believe that it is scientifically possible to accurately determine the correct day.

Muslims’ dithering about when are our holy days, is what keeps us from having an actual holiday for Eid; if Muslims cannot agree when to hold their holy days, then how can we get our schools to agree on when the holy days are so they can give our children a holiday?

It never ends; we are doomed to celebrate our holy festivals on two, maybe three, different days. That’s the bitter part… Continue reading

A Constitution Destroyed: John Yoo and the notorious “Torture Memo”

When the CIA asked King George the Worst, if they could use waterboarding on prisoners (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/03/AR2010110308082.html), his response was, “Damn Right!”. When asked why he would authorize torture his response was, “Because the lawyers said it was okay”.

That would be John Yoo who, like Hitler’s many stooges, rushed to find that “robust interrogation” was fine.

We all know there was a memo that justified torture during the reign of King George the Worst, some of us know the author was John Yoo, but very few know details of what the memo said and how it reached its dark conclusions.
Below is a synopsis of his torture memo along with a link where the actual memo can be read in its complete glory. It is most interesting and revealing, to see how torture is rendered to be NOT torture and how torture is justified in spite of Geneva Conventions and other international agreements, by using statement from various Administration officials and giving them the slight additional twist, to make torture, a more acceptable, non-torture and even when there IS the clear, undeniable torture occurring, how Yoo justifies that under cover of exigent situations, “War!” and the Commander-in-Chief’s prerogative (Some of my comments are in parentheses and in blue). Money, Islamophobia and “War!”

Islamophobia is only a new name for a very old and established commodity for control and power…as old as Time itself…FEAR; it is the oldest method for control and also the most lucrative pursuit in history.

We keep children quiet with fear of the Bogeyman; we keep people under control in religion, because of fear of God’s Wrath and Hell; we rise to political power by invoking fear of economic catastrophe, fear of the “other” and fear of being destroyed…while at the same time presenting ourselves as the best savior, so “Remember to vote for me!”.

Fear brings people to power and Fear keeps people in power; Fear is also the shortest way to fame and fortune….FEAR is what galvanizes the opportunists and Fear is what keeps the best amongst us, silent. Continue reading

The Soldier in Kandahar

The soldier’s gaze wandered across the stony Kandahar desert , looking for signs of life, any signs of life. He did not like this land where it was so hot and so dry and an enemy behind every rock; he missed his own land where his family had a good life, but he knew he was here because he wanted to protect them THERE. 1938 Germany or 2010 USA?

I keep telling people we are in 1938 Germany and if all of us do not ACT and fast, the next few years might well become some of the darkest pages of American history.
Below is a review of a book that is about to be released. Substitute just a few words and reality of today is revealed in stark contrast.

American Media are colluding with the so-called “conservatives” and the so-called “Right wing” when everyone who uses their brain, knows these fear-mongers are neither, but are self-promoting opportunists…just as history tells us, were in The Fatherland. Continue reading

Captain Mohammed Dreyfus

(First published March 29, 2004). In 1893 Alfred Dreyfus, a captain of the French Army, was accused and tried for treason. In spite of evidence to the contrary, he was convicted and sent to prison in Devil’s Island for the rest of his life. The Dreyfus’ case unleashed a storm of anti-Semitism all over France (he was a Jew) and it was only through mighty efforts of people of good will all over France that he was finally exonerated of all charges in 1906 and then too, only after a change of government. He was re-instated in the army with the rank of Major and fought gallantly in WWI as Lieutenant Colonel.

In 2003 Captain James Yee, a Muslim Chaplain at Guantanamo Bay, was placed in solitary confinement, in shackles for most of 76 days in a military brig where he was not even told what time of day or night it was so he could pray. No one was told where he was or what the charges were against him and the word “espionage” was widely used by various spokes people; his military lawyers were told to prepare for a death-penalty defense. Muslim Center in New York

Antipathy towards Muslims and Islam has been around in America since before I came to this country in 1974, but back then, it was considered rude to state such negative sentiments in public.

This all changed on September 11, 2001 when a group of people decided to fly commercial airplanes into the Twin towers, resulting in fires which brought the buildings down, killing almost 3000 people in the buildings. The perpetrators were identified as Muslim and overnight, it became an act of patriotism and righteousness, to bash Islam and Muslims. Continue reading

Supreme Court: Torture is Fine

The “Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave” is fast spiraling down where it is less brave and even less free each day…and each day, the chapters of our history become darker and darker.

I used to believe that Obama would be like a breath of fresh air and he would start to process towards a freer society, instead of the deep hole where we had been consigned to; a place where terrorism by the US was okay, where persecution of a specific class of people (Muslims) was not only okay, it was the primary goal.
