The un-citizening of Muslims

US citizenship refused to woman who joined ISIS.
This case hinges on the State Departments argument that they did not know about Ms. Muthana’s birth until AFTER she was  born and considered her to be covered by the exception to born a citizen rule until then:
“Ms. Muthana’s father, Ahmed Ali Muthana, was a United Nations diplomat from Yemen. Children of people with diplomatic immunity are not automatically granted citizenship despite being born in the United States. But Mr. Muthana was discharged from his diplomatic post shortly before she was born in 1994.
The United States government, however, said it was notified about that change in early 1995, after she was born, and stopped considering him covered by diplomatic immunity only then.”
Pretty persuasive argument BUT…facts become facts when they occur, they do not become facts only after someone has been notified of them. The US constitution is clear about her citizenship as was the US government because they issued her a US passport.

Yes, she was stupid as were the many kids who thought they were serving some great holy order by joining ISIS but there is nothing in the constitution that makes exceptions for stupidity or even for criminal behavior. In the post-9/11 environment however, an exception to all constitutional protections seems to have been inserted in the constitution that is presumed to say that if the person is a Muslim, then all bets are off and anything may be done to him/her; “detain”, arrest, imprison, render to another country, torture and even kill them all.
She IS a US citizen and citizens who commit crimes may be prosecuted and punished, but they may NOT be denied their citizenship rights under any circumstances.
Elsewhere, The US threatened to continue to torture a Muslim US citizen at Gitmo unless he renounces his citizenship and agrees to go to Arabia, the land of his parents birth. One young man Tarek Mehanna, was given seventeen years sentence for translating a brief portion of the Al-Qaeda position statement, while Raymond Ibrahim,  a Christian who supposedly translated the entire document, was lionized as a hero against “terrorism”.

Britain and the Netherlands have also stripped citizenships of their citizens who were involved with ISIS while their skinheads who also pose “a threat to the nation” are allowed to  move around and speak freely.

Such manipulations by the US AND by other Western countries, to impose exceptional punishments on Muslims but light to no punishments to fellow, White, Judeo-Christians do two things. They demonstrate that the West is not as enlightened as it would like to present itself but is in fact, as deep in the moral sewer as the less-developed countries at whom the West loves to point their collective fingers.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, such actions show how Muslims in the West are too cowardly or too shamefully disinterested, to gather together and use their potential political strength to help protect equal rights for Muslims. Muslims are too scared of “the authorities” and too eager to appear to be “Moderate Islam”, to even consider asserting their rights as citizens with a say in the political sphere of their (Western) country.

As Benjamin Franklin said (and this is most true for Muslims today), “We must, indeed, all hang (stick) together or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately.”

  2. Well said. These are most illogical times in these United States of America (and elsewhere too, not to single out the US).
