"To comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable"

The Anti-Shia Alliance

Dear Mr. President,

On April 30th 2014, members of the United Muslims of Washington issued a statement of condemnation of the “Anti-Shia Alliance” conference in Indonesia. This is a particularly dangerous because it has the blessing of major Muslim organizations in Indonesia, the participation and encouragement of the Governor of West Java and the encouragement because of their inaction, by the Government of Indonesia. In effect, this creates an atmosphere of the pre-genocide days of Rwanda except that this call to destroy Shia Muslims has the prospect of spreading throughout the world.

Mr. President, we beg you to use your office and immediately condemn the Anti-Shia alliance and ask the government of Indonesia to step forward aggressively to stem the spread of genocidal bigotry. At this time, you are the only person with the influence that can stop this call from turning into horrible action.

In the past, Indonesia launched a massive genocidal attack against its Chinese population and Rwanda launched its genocide against the Tutsis. Mr. President, today, the US can use its immense influence to help stop another genocide from even getting started. At the same time, the US can continue on the path towards helping to stop the rising tide of extremism and violence that is engulfing us all.

Mr. President, we anxiously look forward to your response to this appeal.

Resolution to Condemn Hate-Action in Indonesia

We are the United Muslims of Washington State. The group comprises of several different Muslim organizations in Puget Sound who have come together to jointly work on issues relating to anti-Islam and anti-Muslim bias. Our charter is to oppose all forms of bias against Muslims and Islam including anti-Islamic, criminal activities regardless of who perpetrates them.

We are extremely distressed by the report in The Jakarta Globe, that an organization called “The Anti-Shia Alliance” has met with the express desire to attack the Shia minority in Indonesia. Even more distressing is the fact that this alliance is supported by Ahmed Heryawan, Governor of West Java and the fact that the Government of Indonesia has not taken instant action against such extreme hate-mongers. After discussions of the news report by The Jakarta Globe at our last meeting in Renton, it was unanimously decided by The United Muslims of Washington, to condemn:

  1. The Anti-Shia Alliance and its head, Tardjono Abu Muas because of their commitment against Muslims of the Shia sect
  2. West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan and Ahmad Cholil Ridwan, a leader of the Indonesian Council of Ulema (MUI) for supporting the works of the Anti-Shia Alliance
  3. Muslim Ibrahim, the head of Aceh Ulema Consultative Assembly (MPU Aceh) also, for supporting the works of the Anti-Shia Alliance

We call upon the government of Indonesia to immediately do its duty of protecting all people in Indonesia.

We also call upon all Muslims to condemn all actions that target and persecute minorities, no matter where they may be.

We further ask President Barack Obama and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, to use their offices to ensure ALL minorities are protected by the Indonesian government.

As Muslims, we are not allowed to attack or work against people who have different beliefs, whether the beliefs are within Islam or outside. As Muslims, it is obligatory for us to take a strong stand against bigotry, whether it is by Muslims or, by non-Muslims and whether it is against Muslims or against non-Muslims.
